Balasore Court Sentences Woman to Life Imprisonment for Killing Companion

Balasore, Jan 1, 2024: A woman in Odisha’s Balasore district has been sentenced to life in jail for the murder of her companion, according to a local court.

The district and sessions judge of Balasore, Asanta Kumar Das, also imposed a fine of Rs 10,000, stated public prosecutor Prasanta Malik.

“The accused, Sita Hembram, was charged under Section 302 (murder) of the Indian Penal Code. After examining 29 witnesses and 26 exhibits, the court delivered the verdict, sentencing her to life imprisonment,” said Malik.

The court also ordered one year of rigorous imprisonment if she fails to pay the fine.

According to the prosecution, Hembram (35) murdered her companion, Badha Marndi (40), both of whom were from Mayurbhanj district. They were residing in a place under Sahadevkhunta police station in Balasore town.

Hembram, in a fit of anger, attacked her companion with a sharp weapon and surrendered at Baripada Town police station on December 18, 2019. She confessed to the crime and claimed that she killed him because he was involved in a relationship with another woman.

The younger brother of the deceased filed a First Information Report (FIR) with the police.
