BHU Professor DC Rai Becomes VC of Babasaheb Bhimrao Ambedkar Bihar University

Prof. Dinesh Chandra Rai, a Senior Professor of Dairy Science & Food Technology, is the Founding Head of the Department of Dairy Science & Food Technology at the Institute of Agricultural Sciences, Banaras Hindu University in Varanasi, India.

Muzaffarpur, Jan 24, 2024: Bihar Governor Rajendra Vishwanath Arlekar on Tuesday appointed six new vice-chancellors (VC) for different universities in the state.

The appointments were made after consulting with Chief Minister Nitish Kumar.

The governor, who is also the Chancellor of the state-run universities, made the appointments from panels submitted by the search committee.

“Those who have been appointed as VCs are: Sanjay Kumar Choudhary (Lalit Narayan Mithila University, Darbhanga), Laxmi Niwas Pandey ( Kameshwar Singh Darbhanga Sanskrit University, Darbhanga), Bimlendu Shekhar Jha (B N Mandal University, Madhepura), Dinesh Chandra Rai (Babasaheb Bhimrao Ambedkar Bihar University, Muzaffarpur), Pramendra Kumar (Jai Prakash University, Chapra) and Sharad Kumar Yadav (Aryabhatta University, Patna)”, said the statement.

Earlier in the day, the Chief Minister (CM) met with the Governor to discuss the appointment, according to sources.

Prof. Dinesh Chandra Rai, a Senior Professor of Dairy Science & Food Technology, is the Founding Head of the Department of Dairy Science & Food Technology at the Institute of Agricultural Sciences, Banaras Hindu University in Varanasi, India.

He is credited with starting B.Tech. and M.Tech. programs in Dairy Technology and Food Technology in the newly established department.

He also served as the head of the Department of Animal Husbandry & Dairying at Banaras Hindu University for two terms.

After completing his B.Sc. in Agriculture from Gorakhpur University in 1984, Prof. Rai received his M.Sc. in Dairy Science from BHU in 1986, where he received the Gold Medal. He completed his Ph.D. in Dairy Technology from BHU in 1992.

With 30 years of teaching and research experience, Prof. Rai has published 174 research/technical papers in national and international journals, edited 3 books, co-authored 5 books/manuals, contributed 33 chapters to edited books, and written 14 technical articles. He has supervised 25 Ph.D. and 52 M.Sc. students.

Prof. Rai is a Fellow of various prestigious organizations, including the Indian Dairy Association, the National Academy of Dairy Science (India), the U.P. Academy of Agricultural Sciences, the Bioved Research Society, the Society of Applied Biotechnology, and the Society of Environmental Sciences, India.

He received the SAB Award of Excellence in Food Biotechnology in 2012 and the ICAR Best Teacher Award in 2012-13. He also serves as the editor of four referred journals.

As a Commonwealth Academic Fellow at the University of Reading in the UK from 2009-2010, Prof. Rai participated in the Commonwealth Academic Fellowship program.

Over the past 25 years, he has visited 20 countries on official invitations. In 2011, he visited Cornell University and Tuskegee University in the United States as a Visiting Professor under the AIP program of USAID to collaborate on developing innovative approaches for instruction in Animal and Dairy Sciences.

In 2019, the Union Ministry of Human Resource Development (India) sent him to Ohio State University (USA) for the Training on Leadership for Academicians Programme (LEAP).

Prof. Rai has served as an Executive Council Member of Mahatma Gandhi Antarrastriya Hindi Vishwavidyalaya (Central University) in Wardha, Maharashtra.

He is also the Visitor’s Nominee for Selection Committees in the Central University of Karnataka, Central University of Jharkhand, and Central University of Punjab.

He is a member of the Monitoring Committee for the CSIR Mission Project – FOCUS (Food and Consumer Safety Solution) and collaborates with the Safer and Sustainable Packaging group (SPG) of FSSAI (FSSAI-SPG) as an expert and collaborative partner.

From 2015-2023, Prof. Rai served as the Founder Chairman of the IDA (Eastern UP Local Chapter) and the Founder Convener of the Eastern Region Chapter of the National Academy of Dairy Science (India).
