CWC 2023: Rohit Sharma’s Record-Breaking Century Guides India to Dominating Win Over Afghanistan

In a thrilling match at the Arun Jaitley Stadium, Indian captain Rohit Sharma’s explosive innings of 131 runs helped the Men in Blue secure a comfortable 8-wicket victory over Afghanistan in the ongoing World Cup.

Afghanistan’s star-studded spin bowling attack struggled to challenge the Indian batsmen as Rohit Sharma smashed boundaries all over the field. He showed no mercy to the Afghanistan bowlers.

Chasing a target of 273 runs, India got off to a flying start with Sharma and Ishan leading the charge against the Afghanistan bowlers. They adopted an aggressive T20I approach, scoring runs quickly.

Sharma’s incredible batting display allowed him to complete his half-century in just 30 balls. He continued his onslaught and reached a century in the 18th over, making it the fastest-ever century scored by an Indian player in a World Cup match.

With Rohit Sharma’s brilliant century and contributions from Virat Kohli and Shreyas Iyer, India comfortably chased down the target with 15 overs to spare. Kohli remained unbeaten with 55 runs, while Iyer scored 25 runs.

Earlier in the innings, Afghanistan struggled as they lost three wickets in the first 15 overs. However, Hashmatullah Shahidi and Azmatullah Omarzai formed a crucial 121-run partnership to bring Afghanistan back into the game.

After Omarzai’s dismissal, Shahidi continued to fight and helped Afghanistan reach a total of 272/8. However, Jasprit Bumrah’s impressive bowling performance, taking 4 wickets for 39 runs, limited Afghanistan’s scoring opportunities.

Match Summary

Afghanistan scored 272/8 (Shahidi 80, Azmatullah 62; Bumrah 4-39), while India comfortably reached the target with a score of 273-2 (Rohit Sharma 131, Virat Kohli 55*; Rashid Khan 2-57).
