HSBC Mobile Banking Crashes Leaving Thousands Frustrated

LONDON – May 4, 2024: HSBC’s mobile banking app malfunctioned today, causing disruption for thousands of customers trying to access their accounts during the bank holiday weekend.

According to DownDetector, a website that tracks online outages, over 3,000 users reported issues with the HSBC mobile app. The problems began around 8:02 am, with reports surging to over 1,600 within 15 minutes.

In a statement posted on social media, HSBC acknowledged the issue and apologized for the inconvenience. “We’re aware some customers are having problems accessing online and mobile banking,” the bank wrote. “We’re investigating as a matter of urgency and will share an update as soon as possible.”

One customer reported receiving an error message stating “503 ERROR: The request could not be satisfied. The Lambda function associated with the CloudFront distribution was throttled. We can’t connect to the server for this app or website at this time.”

HSBC has not yet provided details on the cause of the outage or an estimated timeframe for a resolution.
