Irfan Pathan Questions Dhoni’s Batting Position in CSK’s Loss to Punjab Kings

Former Indian cricketer Irfan Pathan sparked a debate after criticizing MS Dhoni’s batting order in the Chennai Super Kings’ (CSK) recent loss to the Punjab Kings (PBKS) in IPL 2024.

Dhoni, batting at number 9 for the first time in his T20 career, was dismissed for a golden duck by PBKS pacer Harshal Patel. Pathan believes Dhoni, despite his age (42), should bat higher in the order to benefit CSK.

“Dhoni batting at No. 9 doesn’t work for CSK,” Pathan told Star Sports, as quoted by India Today. “He’s in solid form (110 runs, 55 average, 224.49 strike rate) and should take responsibility by batting at least 4-5 overs. Coming in for the last over or two doesn’t serve CSK well long-term.”

Pathan emphasized the importance of Dhoni’s experience, especially if CSK aims for the playoffs. “He needs to bat higher in the order,” Pathan argued. “While his late hitting helped against Mumbai, here, when the team needed him most, you can’t send Shardul Thakur ahead. Sameer Rizvi even had his pads on in the 15th over. CSK needs a solution. Someone has to tell Dhoni to bat for at least 4 overs.”

Dhoni’s late-innings heroics have been a hallmark of his career, but Pathan’s comments raise questions about CSK’s batting strategy and Dhoni’s potential role in their playoff push.
