Banda, Uttar Pradesh – March 28, 2024 – Mukhtar Ansari, a notorious gangster who later became a politician, passed away on Thursday evening at the Banda Medical College after suffering a heart attack. He was 60 years old.

Ansari, who was lodged in Banda jail, reportedly suffered a heart attack and collapsed in his cell. He was rushed to a Banda hospital, but efforts to save him were unsuccessful. The Banda Medical College confirmed his death at 8:25 pm in a medical bulletin.

Security Tightened, Section 144 Imposed

Ansari’s death has sparked security concerns in Uttar Pradesh, particularly in areas where he held significant influence. Authorities have issued alerts in Lucknow, Mau, Ghazipur, and Varanasi. Security is being bolstered in these regions, and Section 144, which prohibits public gatherings, has been imposed in Prayagraj and Mau districts.

History of Health Issues

This was Ansari’s second health scare in recent days. On Tuesday, he was hospitalized for abdominal pain and remained there for nearly 14 hours before being discharged and returned to jail. His brother, Afzal Ansari, had previously raised concerns about the possibility of Ansari being poisoned in prison.

A Checkered Past

Ansari, a five-time former MLA from Mau Sadar, had been incarcerated in Uttar Pradesh and Punjab since 2005. He faced over 60 criminal charges and had been convicted in eight separate cases since September 2022 by Uttar Pradesh courts. He was included on a list of the state’s most notorious gangsters released by the Uttar Pradesh Police last year. Ansari’s family had also expressed fears that he might be killed in a staged encounter.

A Controversial Legacy

Mukhtar Ansari’s death marks the end of an era for Uttar Pradesh politics. He was a complex figure who straddled the line between gangsterism and political power. His legacy will likely be debated for years to come.
