J&K Student Sohrab Qayoom Held, Expelled from Rajasthan University Over Controversial Instagram Post

Jammu, Jan 30, 2024: The Chittorgarh Police in Rajasthan have filed a First Information Report (FIR) against a student from Jammu and Kashmir who is studying at Mewar University.

The student, identified as 21-year-old Sohrab Qayoom, who is pursuing a B Pharma degree, was arrested for allegedly making an offensive post on social media.

The incident occurred when Qayoom posted objectionable comments on Instagram, which led a resident to file a complaint.

The FIR was registered on January 25 and charges Qayoom under IPC Sections 153 A (promoting enmity between different groups based on religion, race, place of birth, residence, and language) and 295 A (deliberate and malicious acts intended to outrage religious feelings).

Sohrab Qayoom is currently in judicial custody, and Harish Gurnani, the Director of Mewar University, stated that the university has taken appropriate actions against him, including expulsion.

Originally from the Rajouri area, Qayoom is enrolled at Mewar University under the Indian Army’s Special Scholarship Scheme, which aims to provide educational opportunities to underprivileged students.

The Jammu and Kashmir Students’ Association (JKSA) condemned Qayoom’s actions while requesting leniency due to his perceived immaturity and lack of political awareness.

In a statement, JKSA national convenor Nasir Khuehami expressed that such behavior is unacceptable and undermines the principles of coexistence in a diverse and democratic nation.

While not justifying Qayoom’s actions, the association emphasized that the charges could have severe consequences on his academic and future prospects.

In letters addressed to Union Home Minister Amit Shah and Rajasthan Chief Minister Bhajan Lal Sharma, Khuehami urged them to consider Qayoom’s case on humanitarian grounds.

The association believes that dropping the FIR against Qayoom is crucial for his rehabilitation, as the charges could negatively impact his future.
