Sabyasachi Makes History at Met Gala, Showcasing Indian Fashion on the World Stage

Kolkata-born designer stuns in embroidered coat, embodies “The Garden of Time” theme

Sabyasachi Mukherjee etched his name in fashion history on Monday night, becoming the first Indian designer to walk the prestigious Met Gala red carpet in New York City.

The celebrated couturier donned a showstopping piece from his Sabyasachi Resort 2024 collection – an embroidered cotton duster coat. Sharing a deeper meaning behind his attire, Sabyasachi wrote on Instagram, “It is craft, that embodiment of human touch, tradition and diversity that will safeguard culture…”

The intricately designed coat, layered with dazzling jewels from Sabyasachi High Jewellery, featured floral motifs that cleverly echoed the Met Gala’s theme, “The Garden of Time.”

Sabyasachi’s historic achievement resonated with fans and celebrities alike. Actresses Bipasha Basu and Zoya Akhtar expressed their admiration, while fans lauded him for championing Indian fashion on the global stage. One fan wrote, “This is the absolute moment,” while another praised his dedication to preserving Indian design heritage: “And I feel so proud…making it a huge luxury brand for the world.”

Adding another layer to his Met Gala presence, Sabyasachi also designed the stunning mint green floral sari worn by Bollywood actress Alia Bhatt, further solidifying Indian fashion’s presence at the star-studded event.
