Shami Recovering After Achilles Surgery, Ruled Out of IPL 2024

Indian fast bowler Mohammed Shami provided an update on his recovery progress on X (formerly Twitter) on Wednesday. Shami underwent surgery on his Achilles tendon in February and has been ruled out of the upcoming IPL 2024 season with the Gujarat Titans (GT).

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) confirmed Shami’s absence on Tuesday. He is currently under the supervision of the BCCI medical team.

“Hello everyone! I wanted to provide an update on my recovery progress,” Shami wrote on X. “It has been 15 days since my surgery, and I recently had my stitches removed. I am thankful for the advancements I have achieved and looking forward to the next stage of my healing journey.”

Shami’s post received messages of support from fans. One user pointed out Shami’s dedication while playing through pain in the World Cup, seemingly referencing another player who might have prioritized the IPL over national duty.

Shami’s absence is a blow to the Gujarat Titans, where he has been a key performer. The 33-year-old picked up 20 wickets in IPL 2022 and followed it up with an even stronger showing in 2023, taking 28 wickets at an impressive average of 18.64.

Shami missed the recent home T20I series against Australia, the entire South Africa tour, the Afghanistan series, and the five-match Test series against England following the World Cup. His last appearance for India was the World Cup final against Australia in November, where he emerged as the tournament’s highest wicket-taker with 24 scalps in just 7 matches.
