Showtime on Disney+ Hotstar: Glossy Fun, Lacks Depth

Showtime, the new series on Disney+ Hotstar by Karan Johar, is a mixed bag. While it entertains with its star-studded cast and juicy Bollywood drama, it fails to deliver a deep dive into the industry’s secrets.

On the plus side:

  • The cast is a major draw. Performances by Emraan Hashmi, Naseeruddin Shah, and others are captivating.
  • The show boasts a glamorous portrayal of the Bollywood world, sure to enthrall fans.
  • If you enjoy campy entertainment, the over-the-top style and thinly veiled references to real-life figures can be amusing.

However, some drawbacks hold it back:

  • The series lacks depth. It avoids a scathing critique of Bollywood, relying on predictable storylines and clichés.
  • The split-season release disrupts the narrative flow (first four episodes now, remaining in June).
  • Characters, especially the lead played by Mahika Makwana, feel underdeveloped despite strong performances.

Showtime might be a fun escape for those who enjoy Bollywood gossip and soapy dramas. But if you seek a groundbreaking or insightful look at the industry, this might disappoint.
